Woe Is Me

I kind of loathe my camera. I realllllly want a new one. Someone, please convince Bubby that I need one. Our current camera is almost 4 years old, has been dropped repeatedly and just isn’t what I want. The light has to be perfect and everything in the shot has to be perfectly still or everything is a big giant blur. It performs great outside in sunny weather, but that is about it. Every time I miss some great moment with the kids or a family shot that might never happen again, it makes me sad. I realize that makes me sound rather whiny and pathetic, but it is true.

This was supposed to be a post about the valentine I made for Bubby and how late I am in posting it, but there I go off on my camera-envy tangent. If I start posting all of our valuables on ebay, you’ll know what I’m saving up for.

That Green Dude is an Angel

drawing

There’s been a ton of drawing going on here lately. Arwyn has been really into my our Ed Emberley books and she’s finally at an age where she can pretty much do them by herself. She prefers if I sit and draw with her, but I can’t always do that. We own three of the books and I’ve found a few at our library, but I think I will be adding some to her Christmas list as well. I love adding to our book collection and I know this is something that will be used for many years to come.

The problem that arises, of course, is that Little Miss One Year Old thinks she needs to do whatever it is that her big sister is doing. She likes nothing better than to sit and draw all over herself with Arwyn’s markers, taking the lid off and putting the lid on over and over again. In a fit of desperation I purchased these crayons at Target one morning. While still in the store, she grabbed the box from me and threw it on the ground, so two of the tips were already broken off when we got home. She then proceeded to peel off every millimeter of paper on every single crayon and broke most of the crayons in half. I do like the triangular design, though that hasn’t done much to stop her from drawing on the couch. At least they are washable. You would think I would have learned my lesson with those ill-fated markers, but apparently not. And thus begins the phase where every clothing item and piece of furniture in the house is covered in something: crayon, marker, ink, dirt, food, or some grotesque combination of all of the above.

Markers FAIL!

markers fail4

Once again, I seem to have gotten ahead of myself. I’ve been saving a package of Crayola’s newest crack for babies Tadoodles. In a fit of desperation one long morning at home, I brought them out of hiding and set up the junior craftionista table in the living room. I thought I remembered doing this with Arwyn when she was Lokie’s age but now that I think about it, I think I only gave her crayons and I think we had no carpet/rug in the living room at the time. These little Tadoodles, while very cute, are egg-shaped and Lokie just kept saying, “Ball!” and throwing them. I’d say, “No, it’s a marker. Draw!” and hand it back to her and she would say, “Ball!” and throw it again. And again. And again. She’s in a big throwing stage. The little balls markers have no lids and I now have a few colorful polka dots on my carpet. But they are washable and I should have known better. It does say 18 months on the front of the package and she is only 15 months. I think maybe next time we’ll go for the triangular crayons instead. Maybe in three months or so.

Swap!

saj postcards

Secret Agent Josephine posted these cutie-pie postcards and offered to swap with anyone that wanted to. Sign me up! Cheap and easy craftiness, sounds good to me. When Arwyn saw what I was doing, she had to get in on the action. I cut a card for her and she got to work cutting and pasting. The card we received from Brenda & Bug is pictured on the left. The card I sent is on the right. Arwyn’s card is pictured below. Thanks for the inspiration, Brenda!

Happy Birthday, Mama

mom bday4

My mom’s favorite color is red and I picked out this cherry paper and then just decided to run with that as a little theme for her gift wrapping. You know I’ll all about the theme! Red and turquoise make a nice combination, don’t you think? Throw in a little leftover Christmas wrapping paper and you’ve got yourself a cute bag of gifts. I can rarely recall my mom buying much of anything for herself, so I enjoy giving her gifts. She’s pretty easy to shop for. While browsing in Barnes & Noble I spotted a cute puzzle book and a box of cards I thought she’d like. I also picked up some glass storage containers to go along with the book and cards. In return, she gave me a cooler full of homegrown food and paid for my dinner. I think maybe I got the better end of the deal.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane

A birthday card for Bubby’s big brother. Was delivered to a sweaty lawn-mowing birthday boy along with some Grolsch (love their glass bottles). Those little doo-dads on the left side are airplanes. He’s a flying aficionado.

Belated

juju bday

I’ve been a bad BFF. Juju’s birthday was August 4th and with all the craziness that’s going on in our lives these days I STILL haven’t gotten her gift procured and sent. I know what I want to get and I’ve been shopping, online and in person. I did call her, though. I used to be so on top of things. I never missed a birthday, anniversary or holiday. Confession: I still have my father-in-law’s Father’s Day card sitting on my desk, yet to be given. I KNOW! I’m becoming a lackadaisical gift-giver. Tsk tsk.

Don’t Try This at Home. Seriously.

We were feeling a little adventurous yesterday and decided to make something from this book:

chapatis2

The recipe was very similar to this one. So we whipped up a ball of dough, we kneaded it and let it rest, then rolled it out into thin pancakes and tossed them in the skillet.

chapatis

I busted out an old cast iron skillet that I bought at a yard sale. I now know why the previous owner sold it. It smoked  so much and made such an awful stink, I was sure the smoke alarm would go off and wake up the baby. But, thankfully, it didn’t*.

When they were finished, we each tried a small triangle with a little butter. I was able to choke mine down by adding some sugar and cinnamon on top. Arwyn decided she didn’t care for hers much. Now I know Indian flatbread is not typically this disgusting, so I’m not sure where we went wrong unless the funky old skillet contributed to the nastiness factor somehow. Because they were seriously pretty gross. I threw the rest in the garbage and chalked this one up to experience.

*No sleeping babies were mistakenly awoken in the making of these chapatis.

Happy Earth Day

earth-day

Here are a couple of Earth Day crafts that Arwyn and I whipped up while the baby was napping this afternoon. Or “World Day” as she keeps referring to it.

earth-day2

First we did a little cut and paste with this Mother Earth project.  That one only took a few minutes, so we still had some time for a second project. We made this glue craft with some plastic containers pulled out of the recycling bin. I would only recommend this for age four or older, as the glue can get pretty messy and food coloring won’t wash out if they get it on their clothes (or the table/floor/baby sister). But if you are ok with the goo, then go for it. You need to paint the glue on pretty thick in order to cover the areas enough for it all to flow together and eliminate bubbles or spaces. We’re still waiting for the glue earth to dry to see if it really sticks to the window.
